How much downtime should we expect during cutover?

Accepted Answer

With MGN and DMS replicating continuously, most cutovers complete in minutes — the switch is a DNS change, not a data copy. Databases migrated with DMS change-data-capture typically see near-zero downtime. Where a legacy system genuinely needs a longer window, you'll know weeks in advance, not on cutover night.

Should we rehost, replatform, or refactor?

Accepted Answer

Rehost (lift-and-shift) is fastest and lowest-risk but carries existing inefficiencies into the cloud; replatforming to managed services like RDS or ECS usually offers the best effort-to-benefit ratio. Full refactoring pays off only for systems you actively develop — we recommend it per workload, never as a blanket strategy.

What happens if a cutover fails?

Every wave has a rehearsed rollback: the source environment stays running and in sync until validation completes, so falling back is a DNS change away. We define a point of no return per workload in advance — before it, rollback takes minutes; after it, we fix forward using the contingency steps documented in the runbook.

Will AWS actually be cheaper than our current setup?

Accepted Answer

Not automatically — a lift-and-shift on default instance sizes often costs more than the hardware it replaced. Savings come from right-sizing, autoscaling, storage tiering, and Savings Plans, which together commonly reduce the post-migration bill by 20–40%. We model TCO honestly during assessment, including the cases where staying put wins.

How do you migrate databases without losing data?

Accepted Answer

AWS DMS replicates the source continuously and applies ongoing changes until cutover, while validation jobs compare row counts and checksums on both sides. For engine changes — say Oracle to Aurora PostgreSQL — we use the Schema Conversion Tool and budget extra testing time, because stored procedures rarely convert untouched.

Can you meet our compliance and data residency requirements?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The landing zone enforces encryption, least-privilege IAM, and audit logging from day one, and workloads are pinned to regions that satisfy GDPR or Türkiye's KVKK residency rules — eu-central-1 and the AWS Middle East regions are common choices. Because the controls are code, auditors can trace every one of them.
